PORTLAND, Maine – The Portsmouth girls used a 23-8 advantage in the third quarter to pull away from Maine Class B’s Oceanside to claim a 54-31 win in the annual Varsity Maine Holiday Hoops Showcase at the Portland Expo on Thursday.
Senior Margaret Montplaisir scored 13 of her game-high 18 points during a four-minute span in the third quarter. Mackenzie Lombardi added 12 points and Avery Romps tossed in 10, all in the first half. Renee Riplay had 12 for the Mariners, who played without star Bailey Breen (out with injury).
Portsmouth led 9-8 after the first quarter, but fell behind 16-12 in the second quarter. They ended the quarter on a 10-0 run to lead 22-16 at the break and never trailed again.
The Clippers play Brunswick, Maine, today at 3:30 p.m.
