Third-quarter surge sends St. Thomas to D-III semis

Second-seeded St. Thomas used a 24-point third quarter to defeat #7 Belmont, 67-50, on Friday night in quarterfinal action of the NHIAA Division III State Tournament.

With the win, St. Thomas advances to the semifinals where they will take on #3 Mascoma Valley on Tuesday. The site is still to be determined.

The host Saints trailed by three after one quarter of play and later led by one at the half, prior to the 3rd-quarter onslaught. St. Thomas buried four triples in the third to win the quarter by 15 points and blow the game open.

The Saints were paced by a game-high 22 points from freshman Cole McClure, while Will Mollica and James Allen added 17 and 16 points, respectively. The Red Raiders were led by 20 points from Anakin Underhill, including 5 threes, and 13 from Keegan Martinez.

Plymouth outlasts Lebanon

Behind four players in double-digits, Plymouth defeated visiting Lebanon 47-37 on Tuesday night.

Dylan Webster (14), Turner Oldeburg (12), Chance Twomey (10), Tevin Stone (10) all reached double figures for the Bobcats. The Raiders were paced by 11 points from Declan Brandis.

Defense propels Monadnock past Stevens

Tenth-seeded Monadnock held #7 Stevens to just 29 points to come away with a 44-29 win in the first round of the NHIAA Division III Girls Basketball State Tournament on Wednesday night.

Monadnock advances to the quarterfinal round where they will take on #2 Hopkinton on Saturday.

The Huskies were led by a trio of double-digit scorers: Shaylee Branon (11), Marlee Carroll-Clough (11) and Reagan Kidney (10). Bella Bovell paced the Cardinals with a game-high 12 points.

Bow’s strong start sends Falcons past West

Bow poured in 38 first-half points to propel the Falcons to a 58-44 win over visiting Manchester West on Tuesday night.

The Falcons were led by Brendan O’Keefe’s 16 points, while Jake Reardon added 15. West was paced by 10 points from Will Tanuvasa.

With the win, Bow improves to 12-4 on the season, while West falls to 11-4.

Sasso nets 1000th, leads Goffstown past Merrimack

Maggie Sasso poured in a game-high 18 points, including the 1,000th of her career, to lead Goffstown to a 58-25 victory over visiting Merrimack on Wednesday night. 

Meredith Winterburn also added 15 points for the Grizzlies, while Gianna Maglio scored nine for the Tomahawks. 

With the win, Goffstown improves to 12-3 on the season and have their sights set on Londonderry (13-2) on Friday.

Gilford downs Berlin, advances to quarterfinals

Fifth-seeded Gilford defeated #12 Berlin in a grind-out affair, 32-23, on Wednesday night in first-round action of the NHIAA Division III Girls Basketball State Tournament.

The Golden Eagles advance to the quarterfinals where they will take on #4 Kearsarge on Saturday.

Gilford was led by 9 points apiece from Olivia Keenan and Megan Hughes, while the Mountaineers were paced by 8 points from McKenna Kelley.

MacDonald nets 35, leads Winnisquam past Belmont

Lauren MacDonald poured in a game-high 35 points to lead third-seeded Winnisquam to a convincing 64-32 win over #14 Belmont on Wednesday night in Tilton.

Winnisquam advances to the quarterfinals where they will take on #11 Mascoma Valley on Saturday.

The Red Raiders were led by 16 points from Mady Carrier and 10 from Madelyn Besegai. Bella Sargent also added 11 points for the Bears.

White Mountains upsets Prospect Mountain

No. 9 White Mountains weathered an early run on the road and blew the game open in the second half to defeat #8 Prospect Mountain, 53-39, in Alton in first round action of the NHIAA D-III state tourney on Wednesday night.

The host Timberwolves came out the gate fired up as they jumped out to a quick 9-2. White Mountains would chip away at the lead and tied things at 22-22 just before half.

The second half belonged to the Spartans. White Mountains outscored Prospect 16-9 in the 3rd and 15-8 in the 4th to advance to the quarterfinals where they will take on top-seeded St. Thomas on Saturday.

The Spartans featured a balanced offensive attack as four players scored in double figures: Ciera Challinor (13), Olivia Lorenz (10), Harper Rowe (10) and Ainsley Savage (10). Prospect was paced by a game-high 19 points from Sophia Capsalis.
