Pembroke downs MV, advances to semifinals

No. 3 Pembroke defeated No. 11 Merrimack Valley, 54-47 in quarterfinal round action of the NHIAA Division II State Tournament on Friday night.

The Spartans advance to the semifinals where they will take on No. 2 Hanover on Tuesday at 5:30 pm. The location of the semifinals is still to be determined.

John Stark downs Milford, advances to quarters

No. 4 John Stark defeated No. 13 Milford, 61-46, in first round action of the NHIAA Division II Girls Basketball State Tournament on Wednesday night in Weare.

The Generals advance to the quarterfinals and will hit the road to take on #5 Pelham on Saturday at 7:00 pm.

John Stark was led by a game-high 26 points from Eleanor Girardet, while Avery Geaumont and Abby Duclos added 13 and 12, respectively.

Shea Hansen paced the Spartans with 17 points, including four 3-pointers. Ellianne Nassy (12) and Claire Cote (9) made significant contributions for Milford.

South sails past Portsmouth in first round

Josh Caruso poured in a game-high 27 points to lead #8 Nashua South past #9 Portsmouth 76-61 in the first round of the NHIAA Division I State Tournament on Wednesday night.

The Panthers advance to the quarterfinals where they will face #1 Pinkerton on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.

Portsmouth led the first half 29-27, but the Panthers ran away with it in the second half outscoring the Clippers 49-32.

Caruso was 9-for-10 from the line, while Zac Castonguay (20 points) and Josh Trip (12) pitched in for the win. The Clippers were paced by Ryan Swartz (22) and Isaiah Reis (13).

Bedford cruises past Central to quarterfinals

Behind a game-high 29 points from Luke Soden, #2 Bedford cruised to an 88-55 win over visiting #15 Manchester Central on Wednesday night in first round action of the NHIAA Division I State Tournament.

The Bulldogs advance to the quarterfinals where they will take on #10 Alvirne at Saturday at 7:00 pm.

Bedford came out firing as Soden (10) and Brady O’Connell (9) combined for 19 1st-quarter points to give the Bulldogs a 24-14 lead after one. Suffocating defense in the 2nd quarter limited the Little Green to just 7 points and Bedford took a commanding 44-21 lead to the break.

The Bulldogs were led by Soden, while O’Connell added 19 and Austin Kasyjanski had 15. Pacing Central was Izaya Diaz with 13 points.

Strong start propels North past Goffstown

No. 3 Nashua North jumped out to a quick 10-point lead and went on to defeat No. 9 Goffstown 76-64 in first round action of the 2024 NHIAA Division I Boys Basketball State Tournament on Wednesday night.

The Titans advance to the quarterfinals where they will take on #6 Windham on Saturday at 7:00 pm.

North was led by 20 points apiece from Robinson Rodriguez and Parth Miglani, 12 from Jaden Pena and 11 points apiece from Alize Roig-Cortez and Luke Peters. The Grizzlies were led by a trio of double-digit scorers: Cam Hujsak (15), Xander McBournie (14) and Noah Durham (12).

Trinity starts fast, rolls past Dover in first round

Five players scored in double digits for #5 Trinity as the Pioneers flew past #12 Dover 74-54 in the first round of the NHIAA Division I Boys Basketball State Tournament on Wednesday night.

The Pioneers will go on the road to take on #4 Exeter in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.

Trinity’s offense came out the gates firing as they jumped out to a quick 10-2 lead and never looked back.

The Pioneers were led by Devohn Ellis (17), Evan Dunker (16), Derek Erilla (12), Jamar Gregory-Alleyne (10), and Jordan Torres (10). Dover was paced by Dylan Jabre with 16 and David Caddy with 12.

Merrimack Valley beats the buzzer in OT thriller

It’s not quite March yet, but there was madness last night in Laconia. Trevor Simonds’ three-pointer as time expired gave #11 Merrimack Valley a 60-57 overtime win at #6 Laconia in first round action of the NHIAA Division II Boys Basketball State Tournament.

MV advances to the quarterfinal round where they will take on #3 Pembroke on Friday at 7:00 pm.

The Pride were held to just four 1st quarter points and trailed 9-4 at the end of the opening stanza. But, they battled back to take a one-point halftime lead, 22-21.

The two teams played even for the second half as an overtime session was needed to decide this one.

Simonds and Aiden Gray paced MV with 16 points apiece, while Andrew Suprenaunt added 11. The Sachems were led by a game-high 20 points from Keaton Beck, 17 from Logan Sanchez and 11 from Caden Tucker.
